1995 Kentucky Bluegrass Cultivar Recommendations
Updated Kentucky bluegrass cultivar recommendations are now available following four years of evaluation in the 1991 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) Kentucky bluegrass trial.
These recommendations are based on evaluation plots located in Urbana, Illinois at the University of Illinois Landscape Horticulture Research Center.
Prior to planting, the previously established vegetation was killed with glyphosate, the area was vertically mowed to loosen the planting soil, and the site was fertilized with one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft.
This trial was planted on September 17, 1990, and seeded at a rate of two pounds of seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
Following planting, the plots were irrigated to insure establishment.
Since establishment, the plots have been maintained at 1.8 inches and irrigated to prevent wilt.
These plots received 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. in 1991, 3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. in 1992 and 1994, and 3.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq.ft. in 1993.
In each of those years, the plots were treated with a postemergence broadleaf herbicide.
The Kentucky bluegrass cultivars recommended in Table 1 are cultivars that performed in the top half of all cultivars evaluated in twelve of the eighteen evaluation periods from 1992, 1993, and 1994.
Table 2 lists Kentucky bluegrass cultivars tested in previous NTEP trials and recommended since 1991.
